Ep. 21 Medic Up! To Nursing Bridge Program aka: Chris @Medic Up! is Going to Nursing School

As many of you know I am an EMS educator. I am the Academic Program Director for a 2-year Technical College in the Upstate of South Carolina. This year is my 27th of EMS. In the last several months I’ve done some serious soul searching. I’ve recognized the writing on the wall and it’s time to move on. I’m starting to feel the effects of 20+ years of EMS both mentally, physically and financially. So, I applied and was accepted to nursing school via a paramedic to RN bridge program.

I’ve witnessed several of my former students be successful so, I’m taking the plunge. Starting in May with a Fundamentals of Nursing class which everyone tells me is a course on how to properly wash my hands. Anyway, I wanted to get an idea of what I could really expect from my nursing classes and what it will really be like once I graduate. I sat down with one of our local nurses from the ED to get my questions answered. Chelise is what we as paramedics call “Jam Up.” She’s an ED nurse with an ICU background. She’s seen a lot, knows a lot and she handles business in a busy trauma center and has been on a few EMS ride-a-longs and I consider her an expert plus I knew she wouldn’t tell my dirty secret until I posted this episode and of course made it “Facebook Official.”

So, sit back and listen as I get my all nursing questions answered. I hope I don’t lose too many friends and followers over this but it’s just time.

Ep.20 Katie Contreras (@kmcontreras8) – @skinnymedic and Me – Rainy Day Paramedic Ramblings. Pt. 2 aka: “Batbelts and Bleeding Control Courses”

Part 2 with our friend from the Interwebz, Katie Contreras (kmcontreras8) Mostly, it’s a lot of Katie and Dietrich making fun of my batbelt. It’s rambling and I don’t even know why you’re listening. Come for the rambling shit talk, stay for the “self-applied-NPA” reference.

Ep.19 Katie Contreras (@kmcontreras8) – @skinnymedic and Me – Rainy Day Paramedic Ramblings. aka: “The Internet Friends Episode” Pt.1

A few weeks back one of our “Internet Friends” Katie Contreras stopped by the Medic Up! Studios to hang out while she was checking out #yeahthatgreenville.  Katie is an Education and Training Lieutenant for San Marcos County EMS in Texas. The three of us share a lot of the same interests and have very similar backgrounds. While we were coordinating her visit to the Medic Up Studios we realized that we had actually met Katie, in real life, about 2 years ago when @skinnymedic and I competed in the National Tactical Medical Competiton in Charlotte, NC. So after navigating a few (many) technical difficulties we sat around and talked into the microphones for a while.  Our conversation jumps around from education, Stop the Bleed, Internet tourniquet battles, different names for Whackers and what’s in Dietrich’s truck. We re-tell the “How @skinnymedic and I met BEFORE he was the @skinnymedic.  I name drop another podcaster (Ginger, you ROCK!) People, I don’t even know why you’re listening to my podcast, go listen to Medic Mindset.  I don’t know, maybe you get something out of the episode, maybe you’re just entertained for 45 minutes.

Also go listen to @skinnymedic on his new podcast: the Civilian Medical Podcast

Ep. 18 Special Forces Medic: Tyr aka Charlie Martel aka @redleader_standingby

Since starting the Medic Up! Podcast it has amazed me what you get if you just ask. I have followed @redleader_standingby since about mid-2017 when he posted a photo essay to his Instagram that depicted an elective field amputation of an Afgan national in 2003 near the Pakistan border. I was impressed by the detail in which he wrote his thoughts about the procedure and how he conducted it in a very resource-limited environment. I was more impressed how he answered questioned posed by many of his IG followers about the medicine. If there is one thing I can attest, it’s that most special forces medics are humble and nerd out over medicine and jump at the chance to pass on lessons hard learned on the battlefield or forward clinic. Mr. Martel also has a way with words. He’s a natural writer and and seems to write the most perfect prose wright when you need to hear it. So, one day I sent a DM through the GRAM and the next thing I know I’m on the phone and pressing record.

Give this episode a listen and pay close attention to his MINDSET. The episode goes off the rails at the end because I timed the interview poorly and had to leave abruptly as I noticed the time was creeping up on me and I had a previous teaching commitment oddly enough, to teach a Stop the Bleed course to local high school faculty. So, hopefully we’ll pick up where we left off if I can catch Tyr before he jetsets off to his next adventure.
